How to Use a Pilates Ring

Practicing Pilates is a little bit like being a home chef: You can get even better results with the right equipment.

What Is the Pilates Ring?

The Pilates ring is a sturdy yet flexible rubber loop with soft pads on opposite sides of the circle. Sometimes called a “magic circle” or “fitness ring,” this Pilates prop is usually used to add resistance or tension to certain exercises. You might press against those soft pads with your hands, ankles, thighs, or other body parts to create tension in those muscles or keep your body in optimal alignment.

The Benefits of Using the Pilates Ring

Adding extra resistance to your favorite Pilates exercises “helps you tap into muscles more easily and advances your workout,” Kristin says.

Perks of the Pilates Ring include:

You’ll build more muscle and strength. In one small 2021 study in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, using a Pilates ring resulted in more core activation during the Pilates Hundred than using a Pilates ball or no prop at all.

Your heart will be pumping more, leading to improvements in cardiovascular health.

You’ll keep your routine feeling fresh by experimenting with fun variations of traditional Pilates moves.

What's the Pilates Ring used for?

Even though the ring is popular in Pilates. Here are a few of the many ways to use a Pilates ring:

Strengthening & Toning Target Muscle Groups
The Pilates ring provides gentle yet effective resistance to help shape and tone areas like the inner/outer thighs, arms, glutes, and core. Its squeeze-and-release movement activates muscles that are often hard to engage using regular workouts, helping build lean and defined strength without adding bulk.

Improving Core Stability & Balance
Almost every Pilates ring movement encourages you to engage your core, which enhances stability, supports better balance, and improves overall functional strength. A stronger core can also help reduce the risk of everyday injuries and support the back during physical activities or long work hours.

By activating your stabilizing muscles, the ring teaches better alignment of the spine, shoulders, and hips. Over time, this can help reduce slouching, improve posture, and promote more efficient movement patterns—especially useful for those who sit at a desk for long periods.

The Pilates ring assists with stretching and lengthening muscles, improving flexibility in the hips, hamstrings, shoulders, and chest. It helps isolate certain muscles to ensure proper engagement, making workouts more efficient and controlled.

Is the Pilates Ring Effective?
The Pilates ring can be effective when used correctly and consistently as part of a comprehensive Pilates ring workout. As with any other prop, it shouldn’t be seen as a replacement for proper form and technique, but rather as an enhancement to your existing routine.

How to Incorporate the Pilates Ring Into Your Pilates Routine?
If you’re a bigtime Pilates fan, you can do it every day. “Since the core muscles are endurance muscles, it's OK to do Pilates exercises daily, if you want.

But generally, it is suggested to start practicing Pilates two to three times a week, and incorporating props like the ring into at least one of those workouts. The added resistance can really make a difference.
